High Performance Computing on a Shoestring
Author: Zach Hope
I really love to save cash when it comes to PCs. It is a good feeling to never have called out a tech guy to fix errors
because you can sort them out without any help. People I know waste a small fortune on computers - they get the cutting edge technology as soon as it comes out and then a year or two later it is old hat. In
contrast, I only buy the best value technologies and keep them suitably maintained so that it is just as powerful other more expensive computers.
When it comes to PCs, there is a rule of thumb that says that
the cost of performance halves every 12-18 months. As far as I'm concerned, this translates as if you really want the latest and greatest gadget just exercise a little patience. You will get it eventually, and
you'll save loads of money, depending on just how patient you can be. As they say great things come to those who wait, and that is certainly the case with computers.
The real secret is to combine this rule of
thumb with another that PCs are quicker when they are properly set up.
The benefit is that: 1. You will save $100s per year because you are allowing prices fall before buying. 2. Your PC is always
operating at its optimum and hence often running quicker than more expensive PCs with more advanced specifications.
It is an obvious idea that most people don't ever consider. When you see adverts for the
latest PCs they without fail tell you just how quick they are. They never tell you the truth which is your old PC is only performing at a small percentage of its possible speed.
Maybe it's because there is
more cash to be made by selling another PC, than improving your old one. In the UK the computer store PC World now has a department called the Tech Guys. If you ask me they ask for a small fortune when you think
about some of the repairs can be implemented by the common home user if they just were given the secrets. Worse still, I read a report in the Times newspaper that said simple repair tasks are being mistakenly
diagnosed as, thus major repair jobs. I have the feeling that they are using the Tech Guys as a tactic to get people to go for unnecessary new equipment.
